Anita Roddick (statement no. 2), Founder and Co-Chairman, The Body Shop International (headquartered in United Kingdom):

"To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1994, The Body Shop in partnership with Amnesty International undertook the 'Make your Mark' campaign, the largest human rights campaign in the country's history, which was launched with the support of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.  We collected over three million thumbprints in 34 countries in support of 12 remarkable human rights campaigners who defend fundamental human rights, often in dangerous and threatening conditions.  Each country then selected a local artist to create a portrait of their adopted defender using the thumbprints.

People often ask if our campaigns are effective and whether we actually achieve anything.  I think we do.  When we worked with Amnesty International, the leverage we were able to exert through our shops generated so many letters that 17 of the 30 prisoners of conscience we were allocated were released.  That's brilliant, but what we really do well, all over the world, is raise awareness...."
